The IRENA/ADFD Project Facility is a funding facility for renewable energy projects in developing countries.

As part of the United Arab Emirates bid to host the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to rapidly promote the development and widespread use of renewable energy, a USD 350 million financial commitment was made through the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD).

These finances are in the form of concessional loans allocated over seven funding cycles to support renewable energy projects recommended by IRENA to ADFD for funding in developing countries.

Applicants for funding must also abide by ADFD funding requirements. The first project selection cycle commenced in November 2012. A maximum of ten projects are selected for funding in each cycle.

Eligibility

Projects applying for funding to the Facility should meet the following requirements:

Projects should be submitted by Members of IRENA, Signatories of the IRENA Statute or States in Accession which are included as developing countries in the DAC List of ODA Recipients from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Preference will be given to project proposals submitted by IRENA Members. For ease of reference, see list of eligible countries.

Projects should deploy renewable energy as defined in the Statute of IRENA:

bioenergy, geothermal energy, hydropower, ocean energy, solar energy, and/or wind energy.
